Like the other two books in The Dollhouse series, I love seeing what new ideas Mary Martel has come up with. I think that is the main reason why I love her books. They are filled with original ideas. Key word: ORIGINAL. They are not a carbon copy of some other book that has risen to fame.Now I am not dissing any other authors, but some tend to jump on the bandwagon instead of writing from their heart. Anyway, back to the novella…
First of all, I want to point out just how much I absolutely love the cover! Total cover porn right there guys!
The actual material is hard to read at times because of the overall theme which will cause one of two reactions – you’ll either want to cry or want to put your fist through the wall.
The series is about a girl nicknamed Duchess who has come from the wrong side of the tracks. She has had more than her share of bad experiences. She befriends a girl named Franky and the series revolves around an illegal business that they have made for themselves.
This novella details how they encountered one another and what it was that made them go down that path. It is dark and gritty and it will screw with your head! But I’m a total sicko so this was right up my alley!
I gave this novella 5 stars because it captivated me from beginning to end. From the moment I opened it on my kindle I was hooked!

We all have a past. We all come from somewhere. Some better than others. Duchess came from a hell none of us can imagine. Imagine that something good came out of a certain hell and you have Franky. The two women, both from similar circumstances meet and embark on a friendship that only they can understand.
This short was awesome! I loved hearing a bit more about Franky and Duchess as well. This series is not for everyone. It is gritty and in your face and that is why I am in love with it. The author has a unique style to her writing and characters and that separates her from others out there. I give this 5 stars
I really loved the first two books in this dark and edgy biker series and really, it's ALL about Duchess. Her quirky and dangerous sex appeal; her ability to love and care for her girls freely (until they prove they are not worthy) and her lack of emotional baggage when she is crossed...just get out of the way of her knives and run for your life if you betray her.
Dark Beginnings gives us a quick background and some more insight as to the relationship between Duchess and Stanley (why she attacked him and why they have a friendly enemy type of thing going on), how she came to be involved with Franky (and took on the role of her protector) as well as how/why she acquired her regal name.
It is brutal at times, sickly dark and perverse and a heartbreaking look at the horrible past Franky endured (perhaps giving more reason as to why she is the way she is in the series) and is not for the sensitive reader.
I liked being able to get some of my questions answered (especially why Stanley was such a mystery) and look forward to more in this series.

**** 4 **** "some scars never heal no matter how much we try" stars
A good look at how Duchess met Franky. Knows how to pull you in with her books. We also get to see the relationship with Stanley even in friendship with him it's keep your enemies close and why she attacked. Duchess has had a life that she's had to protect herself. She comes across brutal but she is who you want on your side with her knives. Franky has a horrible heartbreaking past. Can't wait for more of this series. If you haven't read the series it's a must read.
The tittle says it all. Really truly dark beginnings So thankful that Mary added this installment to the series. We get a chance to really look into how Duchess and franky met and the bond that was created. The strength and love shown between theses two women is truly amazing .
Totally loved this novella. This gives you the background that you need for The Dollhouse. We learn about Franky and Stanley and of course, the start of the show, Duchess.
I would read this novella first before you start The Dollhouse series. You don't have to, but it gives you the background to their lives.
This novella provides a painful glimpse into the pasts of the two main characters of The Dollhouse Series, Duchess and Franky. It is just as the title indicates, a very 'Dark Beginning.' Martel always delivers with her writing and this is no exception. This novella lets us see the circumstances under which these two characters meet and also how their bond is formed. It is somewhat difficult to experience that world but worth it to gain a deeper understanding of these women and what drives their behavior in the present series. If you enjoyed the first two novels in this series, then you will enjoy this one. However, please keep in mind that this is a painful glimpse of their life and since it is not a novel, we don't have the same amount of humor and romance that balance out the other novels. We have disturbing situations and some serious badassness (I might have made that word up!). In summation, it's great and definitely worth the read.
This one is a win win situation in a novel to read. If you haven't read the other two in the series learn first a small part of Libby before the Dollhouse. If you have read it see how the name came about for one hers that is. This gave me a peek into her past that shed more light on Libby that brought her more to life for me. It gives her more depth and better understanding with now had me saying oh yeah. When she first lays eyes on that one girl just knew she was going to do something, a intense machine with a heart of fire fueling her underneath. She does what she has to do from start to finish no half ways with this girl. It also was Franky's lucky day and it filled in her dark corners nicely too. Stanely though is one dude that instead of giving her a hard time should of just shut up from the beginning. After finishing this tidbit I come away with a even better understanding and fuller picture and respect for her and Franky too.
