The pot thief discovers that archaeology is not nearly as cutthroat as the restaurant business

A treasure hunter, pottery dealer, and occasional manufacturer of imitation American Indian artifacts, Albuquerque’s Hubie Schuze knows quite a bit about throwing clay. But ancient Native American pottery is not really intended for dining, so he is puzzled when a restaurateur comes to him asking for dinner plates. The job sounds boring, but the fee does not $25,000 for one hundred plates for a new Austrian restaurant in Santa Fe. The owner insists Hubie relocate to the area for the duration of the job in order to soak in the restaurant atmosphere as he works.

Hubie has dealt with his fair share of grave robbers, museum burglars, and cold-blooded killers, but nothing could prepare him for the infighting that goes on behind a kitchen’s doors. When the cooks start croaking, the pot thief will have to move quickly to collect his fee, save the restaurant, and escape Santa Fe alive.

The Pot Thief Who Studied Escoffier is the 4th book in the Pot Thief Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

The Pot Thief Who Studied Escoffier The Pot Thief Mysteries Book 4 edition by J Michael Orenduff Literature Fiction eBooks

Excellent series modeled to a degree on Lawrence Block's writing. Hubie Schuze is not really a thief by his or my standards. Treasures left buried in the ground are useless. The federal laws putting an end to much treasure hunting are mala prohibita. That is, the activity prohibited is wrong only because the government says that it is. Actions that are wrong in of themselves are mala en sa. These things would be wrong even if no law addressed them. As noted in this novel, the laws prohibiting much treasure hunting were passed at the behest of academia even though there are more sites to dig than there will ever be archaeologists to dig them. A more sensible approach, an idea apparently foreign to many academics and politicians, would be to sell permits to dig on public land with the proviso that anything found would be reported and left in sittu until examined. The government would then have first choice to purhase at fair market value. No space here to add other desirable requirements to such an approach.

This volume in the pot thief series examines restaurants and cooking more than it does pots and archeology. I have an interest in both, so I may have enjoyed the book more than did some. The mystery is intriguing and has a good solution. However, a lot of the pleasure of reading this novel comes from the witty interaction among the characters and Mr. Orenduff's observations of life.

For those who do not already know, Dr. Orenduff was a college professor and university president before turning to full time writing. His entertaining use of the language reflects this background.

In the 4th book in the series, Hubie is short of cash, and so he agrees to use his pottery-making skills to design chargers for a new restaurant opening in Santa Fe. The owner insists Hubie work on site, and he quickly becomes immersed in restaurant politics and the egos that go with them. Grudges and resentments build among the staff, and Hubie's typical good nature ends up landing him in the role of key suspect in a murder of one of the restaurant's staff. Of course, he must clear his name, and there are just enough trips back to Albuquerque and margaritas with his friend Susannah to keep the reader amused and wondering if he and she will ever wind up together. Orenduff's novels are fun, Hubie is funny and self-effacing, and the settings make one long to travel to the Southwest to smell the pinion pine and join Hubie, Susannah and Martin over margaritas and chips and salsa. I've enjoyed all the books in the series and encourage you to read them!
I have loved all the other Pot Thief books but I just could not finish this one. It was just so boring. Way too much restaurant talk. I hope he writes another Pot Thief book soon, very soon, and that it is like the earlier ones.
I so enjoy these books! They are clever and intriguing, and I like that the main characters read many of the same authors I do. I also gained a new perspective on museums based on the hero's observations about them, and now I find myself rethinking that whole system. These books are fun to read. Highly recommend.
Not my favorite of the series, but if you can remember all the French terms for different foods and positions of the kitchen staff, if is enjoyable. Hubie is hired to design a charger plate for a high class new restaurant opening in Santa Fe. He must design on the premises, but when the design is finished, his boss barely glances at it. The pot scrubber has an attitude. The saucier is flirting with him. And one of the staff ends up dead in Hubie's vehicle. The police are after him for murder, larceny and several other crimes. Worst of all, Hubie knows he holds the clue that will solve everything, if he can only remember what it is. Like the menu in the new restaurant, these books are well flavored by New Mexico.
These books are an homage to Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr mysteries and others. There are frequent mentions of these other fiction novels, their characters and authors. This one included both Bernie and Nero Wolfe. The main character, Hubie Shuze, even has an attorney who is very Wolfe-like down to his closed-eyes concentration and rotund frame. There's always a few interesting historical or philosophical facts to accompany the light mysteries as Hubie reads a book to study up on his current project - in this case creating custom plates for an Austrian restaurant opening in Santa Fe. Good fun and interesting commentary on the history and inner-workings of restaurants and high end cuisine.
Each installment of the Pot Thief mystery series is both as tense and comedic treasure, and a romp through The Land of Enchantment (New Mexico) centered out of the modest Albuquerque shop just off the Old Town Plaza, owned by 5’6”, late 40s Hubie Schuze (pronounced “shoes”), purveyor and sometime excavator of Indian pots and expert maker of replicas. His side-kick Susannah, a waitress at a restaurant on the Plaza, and a cast of interesting and hilarious side characters who each show up again and again in each installment, make this a fun series to read. A Mexican-Austrian fusion restaurant called Chile Schnitzel? Wow, and, yes, only in Santa Fe. My only quibble is that each book contains a handful of misspellings and / or grammatical errors, but by book 3 I’d learned to make a game out of spotting them. Slightly tighter editing was in order on each of these. There are also the occasional factual errors. For instance, the author seems not to have known that the “home for wayward priests” in Jemez Springs permanently closed 1995. A fun and interesting series for readers who know New Mexico and inspiration for other readers to pack a bag and go.
