Lisa Lickel’s The Last Detail is indeed a dot every “I” and cross every “t” kinda book. She strikes every emotional bell, blows every whistle, and holds us tight as we travel through this journey on track with every curve and mountain top this story weaves of love and loss, family and faith.Her characters are identifiable and I was drawn into Merit’s struggle and Amalia’s dilemma. How like life…we set our course and never expect to deviate, but God delights in challenging and teaching us through the unexpected twists and turns He allows. Wonderful story. Wish I could give it more than five stars!

The fact that God is interested in every last detail of our lives is illustrated in this book. There were times I wanted to reach into the pages and shake some sense into the characters, tell them to listen to the small still voice of God instead of their own insecurities. Now that’s the mark of a well-written book, when the characters are so real the reader becomes invested in their lives. If you’re ready to get drawn into a story, see how God works and are willing to stay up late to read “just one more chapter” then this is the book for you. It will also make you think about how you react when life takes an unexpected direction.
The Last Detail explores several different subjects estate planning, funerals, and foreign missions. It is a nice romantic story without overdoing the romance. There are complications, of course, as in anyone's life. The true meaning of family, forgiveness, ministry, and the necessity of clear communication in relationships are unifying threads. I liked this book and would recommend it to any woman who likes a slow-paced, pleasant story.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this love story. The realistic characters faced genuine obstacles and worked through them in believable ways. Yes, Merit and Amelia find each other attractive, but there is so much more to marriage--and those thorny issues are incorporated into the story. There is a great supporting cast of appealing charcters, some I'd like to be friends with, and one who's a total loser. Those personalities enriched "The Last Detail" and made it altogether well worth reading. Besides being an entertaining read, this story contains lots of wisdom regarding acceptance of God's plans over ours. This is a book I would recommend to anyone of any age. Don't miss it!
Sometimes you don’t choose a profession, it chooses you. This is the case with Merit, who loves his job as a medical missionary in the small mountainous village of Nehrangestan; and Amalia whose business, The Last Detail, helps people facilitate their final plans before their end of life. When Merit is injured and has to return stateside, providence guides his path to Fox Falls, Illinois where he meets Amalia. While both appear to know the steps they each must take, their journeys are not straight, but crooked and often require detours. In order to find fulfillment Merit and Amalia have to decide what’s most important, following your own dreams, or living someone else’s. Their realizations and discoveries create a dynamic story that delves into what happens when life, family, and faith intersect. The Last Detail artfully melds these diverse elements to create a portrayal of characters that you fully invest in, believe in, and root for from the first line to the last.
Romances bore me. They usually don't apply to the average person and certainly not to a happily married man! The Last Detail is much more than this. It is a story of faith in God's plan as well as a love story and blends both aspects of the plot line so well it makes the reader feel empathy with the characters. Ms. Lickel tells an inspiring tale of delayed gratification culminating in God revealing his purpose in otherwise divergent paths. She also uses descriptions and dialogue that moves the story along and leaves the reader wanting to read just one page more, with each page turned. It keeps you up at night! I look forward to reading more of Ms. Lickel's novels. Five stars!
I chose a 5 star rating because I enjoyed the book. The characters remind me of real life people, including me, who strive with decisions and difficult life issues. A Christian doesn't have all the answers, nor do they constantly behave properly. Merit and company struggle with a sense of calling. He can't make decisions about where to go, and he doesn't know if he should love Amalia and marry her. Merit has a strong longing toward missions, and this book hits the nail on the head with the trials of mission work. I have several family members who serve on mission fields. They have faced many of the trials Merit met in the book. The first half of the book was good, but the second half was even better with a major surprise. I thought I had it all figured out, but Ms. Lickel threw in one new twist after another. I love the title and the idea of The Last Detail. When a loved one dies, it is comforting to have someone help with specifics. There is a lot of Christian teaching in the book, and I like that. If one is looking for a read void of any kind of theology, then don't read this book. However, if you want to read and learn, this book is for you.
This is one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time. Lisa Lickel's vivid characters tugged at my heart. There are several emotional wallops in the book, but the faith and purpose at the core of the hero and the heroine ring true. Truly excellent and worth reading.
